Technology, Math and Science
The ancient Greeks made many contributions and inventions in the fields of technology, math and science. The Greeks made great advances in the arts. The teachings of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle are the foundations of philosophy today. In addition, the Greeks made key discoveries in math, medicine, and engineering.
INVENTIONS
The Greeks made many things. Here are just a few:
TECHNOLOGY
Greek engineers also made great discoveries and advances. Some tools that the Greek engineers invented are still used today. For example, the water screw. Farmers all over the world use the water screw to water their fields. This machine, designed to bring water from a lower level to a higher one, was invented in the 200 BCs by a famous Greek scientist, Archimedes. The greeks also invented the odometer and water mill, among many other things. One inventor invented mechanical toys like birds, puppets, and even coin-operated machines like ones at an arcade.
MATH
Some of the ancient Greeks spent their whole life studying mathematics. One of these people was Euclid. He was interested in geometry, which is the study of lines, angles, and shapes. Many of the geometrical concepts that are taught today come straight from Euclid’s work and findings. Other Greek mathematicians made important advances as well. One geographer used mathematics to correctly determine the size of our planet, earth. Then in the AD 300s and 400s, a well-known woman named Hypatia taught about subjects like mathematics.
SCIENCE
All Greek scientists didn’t just study numbers. They studied other areas of science, like medicine and engineering. Greek doctors made many advances in medicine. They studied the human body to understand how it worked, and while trying to figure out cures for different diseases, Greek doctors made many discoveries and advances. The greatest Greek doctor was Hippocrates. He wanted to find what caused disease so that he could understand how it worked and how to cure it. Although that’s one reason Hippocrates is known, he is also famous for his view on doctors and how they should act.
INVENTIONS
The Greeks made many things. Here are just a few:
- Alarm clock--The first alarm clock was made in ancient Greece. It was invented by Ctesibus, engineer and inventor. During those days, time was usually told using a water clock. Ctesibus then used a complicated system made of dropping pebbles on to a gong to make noise, set to happen at particular times.
- Odometers-- Odometers are measuring tools that help calculate distance. It was first used to figure out how much distance has been traveled by a vehicle. It helped the Greeks create roads, bridges, and set milestones at distances.
